There is a huge choice of frames and lenses available today and, as with clothes, prices can vary enormously. Also, as with clothes, the price tag does not always reflect the quality. We can help you choose the best lenses to suit your needs and can give advice about frames.
Lenses
Slim Thin Minus
This is a standard plastic material made with flatter curves resulting in a thinner lighter lens for short sight without the greater expense of high index lenses. For extra value it is hard coated on both sides.
Lenses for Myopes (short sight)
Transition Lenses
Transitions are the new react-to-the-light plastic sun lens ideally suited to children who need their glasses all the time and would benefit from sun protection. A little more expensive but they serve a dual purpose as they respond quickly to lighting conditions resulting in efficient glare protection in full sun, but fading to a virtually clear lens indoors.
Surface Aspheric Lenses
If you are looking for a thinner long-sighted lens then this is the lens for you. Standard plastic again, keeping costs down, but computer designed to your individual prescription in the particular frame that you have chosen and the way that that frame sits on your own face. Peripheral curves have been flattered to reduce centre thickness and magnification caused by the lens power. Truly custom-made lenses that produce the thinnest possible result without the expense of high index lenses.
Polycarbonate Lenses
Remember that eyewear itself is a potential hazard during sport and physical activity. Polycarbonate is a superior impact resistant material, ten times the impact resistance of standard plastic, essential for people who need their glasses for sport, or who are more at risk of injury.
Polycarbonate comes with a protective hard coat as standard and has the added benefit of being lighter and thinner than standard plastic and fully absorbing ultra violet radiation. Ideally these should be fitted into a purpose designed sports frame so that any risk of eye injury posed by frame or lenses during impact is minimised.
Junior Lenses
Purpose designed 'Junior Lenses' feature a mega hard coat designed to resist those annoying little scratches that scatter the light and interfere with quality vision.
Bi-focal lenses
Instead of two pairs of glasses Bi-focals have a distance AND close-up lens. This helps distance vision and reading.
Frames
We carry a large selection of fashion and designer frames to suit all tastes. The bulk of our frame stock is aimed at the young (or young at heart). Our smaller frames are also particularly useful for adults with smaller than average heads.
Budget Frames
Most practices have a basic range that is either inexpensive or even free (with an NHS voucher). This is usually a cheaper range, produced in bulk, a one (or two) size fits all range. If you are on a budget and have an average sized head these frames will do the job. They are usually utility frames of reasonable strength and simple design. They will not usually fit people with very large or small heads, narrow or broad noses or those requiring particularly long or short sides.
Designer Frames
The word "Designer" is often used to describe any more unusual frame, and some well known designer names may be more usually associated with perfume or clothes. Sports brands are appearing increasingly and the optical industry has some designer names of its own. Often these are extremely good quality well designed frames that look good and wear well. They are an option well worth exploring even though you may not recognize the name.
Fashion Frames
We all like to buy new clothes for different occasions. And we buy different shoes and accessories to complement those clothes and make a complete outfit, a complete image. So why not think of your glasses in the same way. A very versatile accessory that can instantly change your look and the way that others perceive you. You have to wear glasses so use them to your advantage.
Prescription sports glasses and sunglasses
Protect your eyes during sport and in the sunshine by getting a pair of precription sports glasses or sunglasses.
Take you time looking at frames. There is always someone to help if you want it, but if you would prefer to choose with a friend or by yourself, that’s fine too. We’ll be available to give advice on colour, style, fit and lens types that will best suit your prescription and lifestyle needs.
